Chapter Eleven

Martina

I kicked back one last swig of my home brew and shoved the mug back into the cupholder. I shook my head. Enough with the self-pity party, Martina. I reminded myself that I‘d had a lot on my plate, and that‘s why I‘d not done everything I should‘ve for Rose. That ended now. I was a warrior. Unstoppable. You got this, Martina. I popped a mint and hurried out of my car toward the entrance of the building.

Inside, pumped and ready, I opted to take the stairs instead of the elevator. God knows I needed the exercise; it‘d been weeks since I hit the gym, and I could feel it. I hurried up the stairs. By the second flight, I panted for more air but didn‘t give up. I couldn‘t, not now. A tight grip on the safety railing, I hiked the remaining four flights. I caught my breath before opening the door to the hallway. Nobody from the office needed to see me like this. I was now regretting running up the stairs, seeing as now my armpits were sticky, and sweat trickled down my spine.

Taking a few minutes to breathe steadier, I pushed open the door to the hall and entered Drakos Security & Investigations.

Mrs. Pearson was in the middle of a conversation with someone on the phone. Perfect, no need to stop for polite chitchat. I waved as I passed, but she lifted her finger to stop me.

“Please hold,” Mrs. Pearson said and rested the receiver against her chest. “Perfect timing. I‘m on the phone with King County Correctional. You‘ve been approved for an interview with John Mudgett. Do you prefer later today or tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow would be best.”

“I‘ll make arrangements.”

“Perfect. Thank you.”

At least something was going right. Hopefully, talking to Rose‘s ex would give me insight into who was after her. “Oh, and when Rose Green arrives, please send her straight back.”

“You got it. Take care.”

I marched to my cubicle with purpose. I needed to keep my head clear and finalize a plan for Rose. Number one issue to tackle—safety. We‘d put new locks on the door, so if the intruder had a key, he wouldn‘t anymore. One night away to get some sleep would be okay, but these types of predators don‘t stay away for long, and I was sure Rose didn‘t want to live the rest of her life in hiding. No, I wouldn‘t allow it, and I‘d teach her to defend herself. Self-defense. Weapons training. Even if the jerk were able to gain entry into her apartment again, I would teach her to fight him off, at least long enough for the police to arrive. I‘d teach her how to spot a tail and provide tips for being alert at all times. Not only could it save her life, but the ability to defend oneself empowers and builds confidence. I owed her that much, considering my sloppiness could have gotten her killed. I shook the thoughts from my brain. I had to remain positive, not dwell on what had gone on before.
